Conference

From the SLAS CEO

Dear SLAS2017 Attendees:

The recent Executive Order signed by President Trump to ban admission into the U.S. by citizens of seven countries has caused confusion and distress around the world. We want you to know we are monitoring this issue and its ramifications very closely and will provide you with the information you need to have a productive experience at SLAS2017.

Many societies have spoken out against this Executive Order. It is, indeed, a polarizing topic that inspires many to vociferously express their opinion regardless of which side of the issue they may fall. While we all have our own personal views on this issue, SLAS as a whole has not historically taken an official stand on political issues. That could change at some point. IF it does, it will be after long, thoughtful consideration by the organization's leadership, with specific regard to the potential impact on our Mission and Vision. For now, the Society will continue to focus on delivering the highest quality content and provide a venue where you can effectively learn, connect with peers and conduct business.

In the short term, to facilitate attendance by those potentially impacted by this Executive Order, there is a dedicated page for international travelers on SLAS2017.org that provides a host of helpful information and links. If you are unclear about any regulation pertaining to travel to the U.S., please contact the U.S. State Department directly. Unfortunately, the SLAS team is unable to provide any specific advice or direction on your travel plans.

We are in regular contact with the hotels and Convention Center in Washington, DC to ensure all security protocols are up to date and communicated to our team. There is the chance that marches or protests will move through Washington, DC, over the dates of SLAS2017. In the event that these could disrupt travel to the conference or getting around the city during SLAS2017, we will share pertinent information with you as we receive it.

Washington, DC, is a very safe city. The Walter E. Washington Convention Center is centrally-located in a highly visible area of the city. While these recent regulations are making travel challenging for many, we know SLAS2017 will be a rewarding experience for everyone. I look forward to seeing you at the conference.
